Lagos, Portugal, is a paradise known for its stunning beaches and mesmerizing caves. But did you know it also has an amazing culinary scene? Whether you're a travel enthusiast, a foodie, or a wine lover, Lagos has something for everyone. As many have enjoyed my piece about Porto, I thought I'd share my favorite places to eat and drink in Lagos.

Discovering Dining Delights in Lagos

If you're a wine enthusiast, Avenida is the place to be. With the deepest wine list in Lagos, this Michelin-recognized restaurant offers a variety of wines from around the world, including Burgundy wines at reasonable prices. The food here is both imaginative and indulgent. Think bone marrow topped with caviar and tenderloin steak cut and served right at your table. It's a dining experience that will leave you craving more.

The ambiance at Avenida is elegant yet welcoming, making it perfect for special occasions or a romantic dinner. The staff is knowledgeable and can recommend the perfect wine pairing for each dish. If you're a "wine person," Avenida should be at the top of your list.

Pescador is a Lagos institution, perfect for lunch or dinner. This fish joint is known for its fresh-caught whole fish, mussels, and prawns with a local Portuguese flair. While they don't take reservations, the wait is well worth it. The wine list might be minimal, but you won't have a hard time finding the perfect Alvarinho or Douro Rosé to accompany your meal.

The atmosphere is casual and lively, with a focus on delivering the best seafood experience. The open-air seating adds to the charm, allowing you to enjoy your meal while soaking in the views. Pescador is a must-visit for seafood lovers.

This Michelin-recognized restaurant delivers on both food and wine. While the wine list doesn't compare to Avineda’s, Restaurante dos Artistas offers wonderful Portuguese selections. Their tasting menu changes every two weeks, ensuring a fresh and exciting dining experience every time you visit.

We opted for the "Chef's Menu," with highlights including scallops with lavender and fennel and a duet of duck. For those seeking a nice dining experience with a touch of artistic flair, Restaurante dos Artistas is the place to go.

Dubbed the "King of the Algarve" and voted one of the "Top 50 Burger Joints Worldwide," Nah Nah Bah quickly humbles any skeptic. This no-frills craft burger restaurant proudly displays an article from The Guardian titled "Gourmet Burgers in Lagos, Portugal" on the wall.

Expect options like the "Toucan Burger," featuring a seared beef patty with crispy bacon, juicy pineapple, melted cheese, tomato, onion, lettuce, and a secret family sauce. Or try "The Sheriff," with a sizzling beef patty, spicy jalapeños, crispy bacon, melted cheddar cheese, lettuce, and smoky BBQ sauce. Pair your burger with a local bottled beer for the perfect dinner combo.

Exploring Wine Bars in Lagos

Mosto is the ultimate destination for boutique artisan Portuguese wines. Pick a bottle off the wall to go or stay and enjoy some thinly sliced jamón. They host winemakers twice a month and offer customized tastings.

The cozy and intimate setting at Mosto makes it a great place to unwind and discover new wines. The staff is passionate about wine and eager to share their knowledge, ensuring you leave with a newfound appreciation for Portuguese wines.

Pro tip: they're only a 5-minute walk from Avenida, making it the perfect spot for a pre-dinner glass (or two).

An oasis for natural wine lovers, Madame! is owned by a French woman from a wine-producing family. You'll receive incredible recommendations and insights into whatever glass (or bottle) you choose. We enjoyed a Pet Nat from Espera, which was delightful.

The atmosphere at Madame! is chic and inviting, with a focus on sustainability and natural wines. It's a great place to relax and enjoy a unique wine experience in Lagos.

Travia is another natural wine bar that focuses on local and sustainable food products. The space is new and sleek but also welcoming with outdoor seating for optimal people-watching. The combination of innovative wines and delicious food makes Travia a standout spot for wine enthusiasts.

Whether you're looking for a casual drink or a full culinary experience, Travia offers something for everyone. The knowledgeable staff can guide you through their selection, ensuring you find the perfect wine to suit your taste.

Sipping Cocktails and Craft Beers in Lagos

Pepper's Bar is an incredible cocktail bar with the option to sit on the roof and look out at the sea. It's the perfect spot for a cocktail before dinner or a great place to watch the sunset. The bartenders here are true mixologists, crafting unique and flavorful drinks.

The rooftop setting adds a touch of magic to your evening, making every visit to Pepper's Bar a memorable one. Whether you're in the mood for a classic cocktail or something more adventurous, you'll find it here.

A trendy speakeasy, Forbidden Door will have you coming back night after night for a nightcap. You'll have to ring a doorbell to get in, and there's no signage anywhere. Once inside, enjoy jazz music and a prohibition-style interior. The cocktails are crafted to perfection and super imaginative. My favorite was the espresso negroni.

The secretive entrance and speakeasy vibe add an element of excitement to your night out. It's the perfect place to end your evening with a unique and expertly crafted cocktail.

For craft beer lovers, Lagos Beer & Co is a great brewpub to grab local craft beer and excellent prego sandwiches. There are TVs everywhere, so you can always catch a football game while enjoying your drink.

The laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff make Lagos Beer & Co a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Whether you're a beer connoisseur or just looking for a casual place to hang out, this brewpub has something for everyone.
